In the early ’90s, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a Mexican American singer who was quickly growing in popularity with her upbeat Tejano music. She soon grew out of her home state of Texas as she toured around the United States and Mexico. However, at the height of her career in 1995, she was murdered at the age of 23 years old.
Since her death, Quintanilla’s dream came true when her name became known not only around America but the whole world. Her bubbly personality and talents continue to be appreciated through movies, songs, and more recently, makeup based on her style.
In April, both her listeners and makeup enthusiasts were ecstatic when Mac Cosmetics announced that they partnered with the family of Quintanilla to produce the Selena Mac Collection.
It quickly became the top trending topic on Facebook with thousands waiting to see what would be offered. All of the items of the complete collection were released Sept. 14. The World Premiere was held on Sept. 30 in Corpus Christi, Quintanilla’s Texas home town.
“It’s a beautiful thing that people are now appreciating a Mexican singer that has long since passed,” Elisia Spatafore, freshman, said. “It’s cool that people are starting to know more about her.”
Overall, the kit comes with five eyeshadows, three warmer-toned lipsticks, a liquid black eyeliner, a mascara tube, a brush, and a bronzer-blush duo with a mirror. Online shoppers can also get their hands on the light pink colored Bidi Bidi Bom Bom lipgloss. A lot of the names of these products correspond with the titles of Quintanilla’s most popular songs, such as “Como la Flor” lipstick and “No me queda mas” eyeshadow.
“The colors are really pretty, [specifically] the dark colors. The brush looks great and I’m really excited to buy it.” Emily Sadowski, sophomore, said.
The collection went on presale Sept. 28, and put online on Oct. 1. It will also be in stores from Oct. 6 to Nov. 17. Fans will then be able to buy the anticipated makeup inspired by the star whose light was burnt out far too soon.
